Best Fractional Chief AI Officer Firms: 7 Options Compared
By Jordan SolenderUpdated 9 min read
The best fractional Chief AI Officer firm depends on whether you need a leader only or a leader with a team that builds. Consultancies supply both. Marketplaces and search firms supply an individual executive, and your own staff or another vendor does the building.
Disclosure: this guide is published by Ironbridge AI Advisory, and Ironbridge is one of the seven firms listed. We include ourselves and say so plainly. Details about every other firm come from that firm’s own public website as of October 2026. Verify anything important with the firm directly, because offers and prices change.
The firms are grouped by type, then listed alphabetically. This is not a ranking, and there are no scores.
How we chose these firms
We started with firms that appear in searches and roundups for fractional Chief AI Officer services, then kept the ones whose own sites describe a fractional AI leadership offer or a way to hire one. Each was checked on five criteria.
- Who they serve. Company size and industries, as stated on the site.
- Engagement model. Embedded executive, executive plus build team, marketplace match, or executive search.
- Public pricing. Whether the site shows a price. Where it does, we quote it as published.
- Proof they publish. Named clients, case study results or network size.
- Location. Where the firm says it is based and which regions it covers.
If a fact was not on the firm’s own site, we left it out.
Three ways to buy a fractional CAIO
Fractional AI leadership is sold in three forms, and the form decides who does the building.
- Consultancy. A firm provides the executive and usually the people who build. You get one contract and one point of accountability.
- Marketplace or network. A platform matches you with an independent executive. You manage that person and supply the builders.
- Executive search. A search firm runs a formal process to place a fractional leader, often with a path to a full-time hire.
If the role itself is new to you, start with what a fractional Chief AI Officer is.

Consultancies with a fractional CAIO offer
chiefaiofficer.com
Chief AI Officer offers fractional Chief AI Officer services and a certification program. Its site describes a three-step method: choose the work worth improving, build it with the people who own it, and measure what changes. A client can buy planning, implementation or fractional CAIO support.
The site focuses on construction, environmental health and safety, and manufacturing. Published results include 780 hours returned per year from one construction pilot and more than 1,500 hours saved per year for an EHS client. Client names are not disclosed.
The only price we found is for the certification: $5,000 for six months of access, as published on their site. Fractional service pricing is not listed, and we could not confirm a location.
Fit: an operations-heavy company in one of its three sectors. Consider: ask what the fractional engagement costs and who builds.
Fifty One Degrees
Fifty One Degrees is an AI consultancy for mid-market businesses with offices in London and New York. Its site says clients typically have £5m to £250m in turnover across the UK and US. It builds production AI agents, voice AI and predictive models.
Its fractional Chief AI Officer service covers strategy and policy, implementation leadership, capability building and board advisory. The page says the commitment is typically two to five days a month, with a separate engagement when an initiative needs more. The fractional fee is not published. The site does publish other prices, including a proof of concept under £15,000, as published on their site.
Published proof includes named case studies, such as 48% of inbound aftercare resolved without a ticket at Heatable.
Fit: a mid-market company that wants practitioners embedded with its team and internal capability built. Consider: it is UK-rooted, so US buyers should confirm who leads from New York.
Ironbridge AI Advisory
Ironbridge AI Advisory, formerly Solender AI, is based in Rockville, Maryland. It is a senior AI team that a company plugs in for one flat monthly fee, month to month. It provides fractional Chief AI Officer leadership, finds the work worth automating, builds AI agents, workflow automations and custom AI web apps, and keeps them running.
Ironbridge serves small and mid-market US companies. Its published work spans nine industries, shown in the case studies. The fractional CAIO playbook describes how the role runs in practice.
Ironbridge does not publish pricing on its site.
Fit: a company with no AI staff that wants leadership and delivery under one agreement. Not a fit: a company that already has engineers and only needs a few advisory hours a month, a board that wants a named executive seconded full time, or an enterprise that needs a large model risk and governance program.
ISHIR
ISHIR is a software and AI product development company headquartered at 2001 Ross Ave in Dallas, Texas, with offices in India, the UAE and Singapore. Its fractional CAIO page lists AI strategy and business alignment, roadmap and prioritization, operating model and governance, architecture oversight, execution oversight and board advisory.
The page says the CAIO works on a fractional or on-demand basis and that engagements often run six to twelve months during active transformation. It mentions startups, mid-market organizations and global enterprises. Pricing is not published.
Fit: a company that wants AI leadership connected to a software delivery firm. Consider: ask who the named executive would be and how much time is committed each week.
Marketplaces and networks
Fractionus
Fractionus is a marketplace for fractional executives covering the US, UK, EU and Australia. Its fractional CAIO page says you brief the firm once, then meet two or three vetted candidates within days. The site advertises zero fees to hire.
The page describes its vetting as based on what a candidate put into production, what it cost to run and what happened to the business afterward, with reference checks on delivery. It says most companies start at one to two days per week for the first 90 days. Day rates are in a separate rates guide, and we did not find specific numbers on the page.
Fit: a company that wants an individual executive quickly and has builders already. Consider: you manage the executive and the delivery team yourself.
Umbrex
Umbrex is a network of independent management consultants. Its site says more than 90% of its consultants are alumni of McKinsey, Bain or BCG, and that clients receive candidate bios within 48 hours. Interim and fractional executives are a listed service line.
Umbrex publishes a fractional CAIO playbook that describes the role at one to three days a week. The playbook cites a fractional retainer of $15,000 to $30,000 per month. That is a figure from the playbook, not a quoted Umbrex rate.
Fit: a larger company or private equity sponsor that wants a strategy-trained independent. Consider: candidates are independents, so confirm hands-on AI delivery experience.
Executive search firms
Christian & Timbers
Christian & Timbers is an executive search firm. Its site says it has placed technology executives for more than four decades and that it runs fractional placements with the same scorecard and reference work it uses for retained searches.
Its hiring guide states that fractional CAIO retainers generally run from $3,000 to more than $30,000 a month. That is a market range from the guide, not the firm’s fee.
Fit: a company that wants a rigorous search, possibly leading to a permanent Chief AI Officer. Consider: a search takes longer than a marketplace match.
How to choose
Decide who will build before you decide who will lead.
- You have engineers and need direction. A marketplace, network or search firm can supply the executive. Your team executes.
- You have no AI builders. A consultancy that includes delivery avoids a second vendor search. Ask what build capacity the fee includes.
- You expect to hire a full-time CAIO later. A search firm can run a fractional placement now and a permanent search after. See fractional versus full-time CAIO.
- You are in a specialized sector. Favor a firm with published results in your industry.
Then compare offers on the same terms.
- How many days or hours a month, and who exactly fills the seat?
- What is delivered in the first 30, 60 and 90 days?
- Is building included, and who maintains what gets built?
- Who owns the roadmap, code and data at the end?
- What notice is needed to stop?
The guide on how to hire a fractional CAIO covers vetting in depth. The cost and pricing guide explains how to compare fees across models.
Frequently asked questions
What does a fractional Chief AI Officer firm do?
It supplies senior AI leadership part time. The executive sets AI priorities, governance and a roadmap, and reports to leadership on progress. Some firms also supply the engineers who build the systems. Others supply only the executive.
How much does a fractional CAIO cost?
Few firms publish a fee. Two published market ranges appear in this guide: $15,000 to $30,000 a month in the Umbrex playbook, and $3,000 to more than $30,000 a month in the Christian & Timbers guide. The spread reflects very different time commitments and whether builders are included.
Is this list ranked, and who wrote it?
It is not ranked. Ironbridge AI Advisory wrote it and is one of the firms listed, so firms are grouped by type and ordered alphabetically with no scores. Facts about other firms come from their own websites as of October 2026.
Should I use a marketplace or a consultancy for a fractional CAIO?
Use a marketplace when you have people who can build and only lack leadership. Use a consultancy when you need both leadership and delivery. The questions answered guide compares the two in more detail.
How much time does a fractional CAIO commit?
It varies by firm. Fifty One Degrees states two to five days a month. Fractionus says most companies start at one to two days a week. The Umbrex playbook describes one to three days a week. Get the commitment in writing.
Does a small company need a fractional CAIO?
A small company needs someone who owns AI decisions, but the title matters less than the outcome. If nobody is choosing what to automate, checking data risk and making sure systems get shipped, the role is missing. A fractional leader fills it without a full-time salary.
