AI Customer Support Agents

AI customer support agents that resolve tickets and know when to hand off.

An AI customer support agent is software that reads a customer's message, finds the answer in your documentation, takes the action in your systems and passes the conversation to a person when it should. It is for support teams with more routine tickets than staff to answer them. Ironbridge AI Advisory builds these agents on top of your existing helpdesk and runs them for one flat monthly fee, as part of our AI agent development service.

Cast iron arch spandrels of the Iron Bridge

Where support teams lose time

The same questions, every day

Order status, password resets, billing dates and how-to questions fill the queue and crowd out the tickets that need thought.

Slow first response

Customers wait hours for an answer that already exists in a help article nobody linked.

No coverage after hours

Tickets that arrive overnight and on weekends sit until morning, and the backlog starts the day ahead of the team.

A knowledge base that drifted

Articles no longer match the product, so agents answer from memory and answers vary by who picks up.

What a good AI support agent does

The details that decide whether customers like your AI or resent it.

Answers from your knowledge

Responses come from your help center, past tickets and internal documents, with the source cited. It does not make up policies.

Takes action

Looks up accounts, checks order status, processes simple changes and creates tickets. It resolves the request instead of only replying.

Works in chat, email and voice

One agent and one knowledge source across channels, with natural turn-taking on phone calls.

Hands off with context

Clear triggers for escalation, a summary for the human who takes over and an always-visible way to reach a person.

Speaks the customer's language

One knowledge base serves customers in many languages, with no separate copy to maintain for each.

Drafts for your team

On tickets it should not close itself, it prepares a suggested reply and the relevant account details for the agent who owns it.

Tickets to give the agent, and tickets to keep

Good for the agent

How-to questions, status lookups, account changes with clear rules, appointment changes and collecting details before a human takes over.

Keep with people

Angry or distressed customers, refunds and exceptions outside policy, legal or safety issues, and anything the agent has not seen before.

Agent first, human close

Complex technical cases where the agent gathers logs, account history and steps tried, then routes to the right specialist.

Decided by your data

We sort your recent tickets into these groups before building, so scope comes from what customers ask, not from a guess.

How we deploy AI support agents

  1. 1

    Audit tickets and knowledge base

We study recent tickets and the articles they should map to. Gaps in the knowledge base are the biggest limit on what an agent can resolve.

  2. 2

    Build the agent

Retrieval, tools, instructions and escalation triggers, tested against your real ticket history before any customer sees it.

  3. 3

    Pilot on a slice

One channel or customer segment first, measuring resolution, handoffs and satisfaction against the current baseline.

  4. 4

    Expand and govern

Roll out to more channels, review edge cases weekly and fix the knowledge base wherever the agent gets stuck.

Helpdesks and channels we build on

Helpdesk platforms
Zendesk, Intercom, HubSpot Service Hub, Freshdesk and similar tools. Your helpdesk stays the system of record.
Voice
Phone agents for inbound support lines and after-hours coverage, with transfer to a live person.
Back-end systems
Order, billing, scheduling and account systems, connected by API so the agent can look things up and make permitted changes.

What we track

  • Resolution rate: tickets closed by the agent without a person
  • Deflection rate, measured on your own tickets during the pilot
  • First response time before and after
  • Customer satisfaction on AI-handled tickets compared with human-handled
  • Cost per ticket

Questions we get asked

What is an AI customer support agent?

It is a system that handles support conversations end to end: reading the message, retrieving the relevant documentation, taking actions in your systems and escalating to a person when needed. It differs from a scripted chatbot because it can act and can handle questions it was not given a script for.

Can AI handle customer support tickets without a human?

It can for routine, well-documented requests such as status checks and how-to questions. Exceptions, upset customers and anything outside policy should go to a person, and a well-built agent recognizes those cases.

What deflection rate is realistic for an AI support agent?

It depends on how narrow the scope is and how complete your knowledge base is, so we measure it on your own tickets during the pilot instead of quoting a number in advance. Our guide on how AI agents deflect support tickets explains what drives it.

Will an AI support agent hurt customer satisfaction?

Done well it should not, because customers value a fast, correct answer. Poor results almost always trace to escalation design: customers stuck with no path to a person.

Does it integrate with Zendesk, Intercom or HubSpot?

Yes. The agent works inside your existing helpdesk, which remains the system of record, and tickets it hands off arrive with a summary.

Can an AI agent answer support phone calls?

Yes. Voice agents answer inbound calls, resolve routine requests and transfer to a person with context. Our guide to AI voice agents for customer support covers where voice works and where it does not.

How much does an AI customer support agent cost?

With Ironbridge, one flat monthly fee, month to month, covers building, running and improving the agent. The amount is scoped on a strategy call against your ticket volume and channels.
